A co-founder of an iconic L.A. comedy troupe has died. Though most people knew Peter Bergman through the offbeat “Firesign Theatre,” those of us here at KFWB knew him as a co-worker. Peter was a news writer and anchor a few years ago.
Peter’s radio career was launched in high school as an announcer on the campus P-A system. He lost the gig after his unauthorized announcement that the Chinese communists had taken over the school and that a “mandatory voluntary assembly was to take place immediately.”
Bergman and three colleagues — Phil Proctor, Phil Austin and David Ossman — founded Firesign Theatre in 1966. Peter Bergman died on Friday due to complications from leukemia. He was 72.
