The government of Turkey is asking the J. Paul Getty Museum to return several artifacts it says were stolen and smuggled out of the country. The Turkish government claims the Getty along with several other American museums have objects in their collections that may have been illegally excavated from the country’s archaeological sites.
A list provided by Turkish officials and obtained by the “L.A. Times” reveals ten objects from the Getty. They include four marble muses on display at the Getty Villa’s Basilica gallery. A Getty spokesman said the museum is in ongoing talks with Turkey, but declined to reveal any specifics.
