(AP) – People who live aboard boats in a Los Angeles Harbor marina are getting the heave-ho.
The Harbor Department says the Colonial Yacht Anchorage docks and 138 slips in Berth 204 are dilapidated and unsafe. The 95 tenants must leave by May 1.
And that’s bad news for the 11 boat owners who live aboard their boats at bargain prices.
The Los Angeles Times says 76-year-old Harold Hazelton and his 75-year-old wife Donna have lived aboard their 43-foot boat in the marina for more than 30 years.
The couple pays $636 a month for the boat slip and moving to another marina would more than double that.
There’s another problem for the Hazeltons, who live on a fixed income: The engine doesn’t work and it could cost $3,000 to fix.
