Holiday travel predictions for the Southland
(CNS) – More than 760,000 travelers are expected to pass through Los Angeles International Airport over the Memorial Day weekend, a 7.4 percent drop from the four-day holiday period last year, airport officials said today.
LAX officials said the drop can be attributed to higher air fares being driven by elevated fuel prices.
But in the long run, airport officials said they anticipate more than 19.9 million people passing through LAX during the summer travel season, a 4 percent increase over last year’s 19.1 million travelers. They contend the improving economy and the addition of summer air service to various overseas destinations will drive the increase.
The Memorial Day travel period begins Friday and continues through Monday. Airport officials said Friday and Monday are expected to be the busiest travel days.
The summer travel season begins Friday and lasts through Labor Day.
Passengers traveling during the peak times of 6 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 to 11 p.m. were being advised to arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.
