Navajo establishes new judicial district in Pinon
(AP) – The Navajo Nation has established a new judicial district on the reservation.
The Tribal Council’s Law and Order Committee recently passed legislation for a new court in Pinon, creating an eleventh district. It will serve several communities that previously were part of the Chinle district.
A judge and a court clerk from Chinle had been traveling five hours roundtrip to Pinon once a month for the past year to hold hearings for juveniles.
Tribal Supreme Court Chief Justice Herb Yazzie says the new court will improve services to an isolated region that’s in desperate need of them.
The tribe’s Judicial Branch is in search of a judge, who will work in a temporary space until money can be found to build a courthouse.
