(AP) – A Southern California city councilman has been charged with sexually assaulting seven women during his helm as a high-ranking county executive in what prosecutors call an abuse of power and the public trust.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas told reporters Tuesday that 47-year-old former county public works administrative manager Carlos Bustamante faces a dozen felony charges ranging from false imprisonment to sex offenses. Bustamante is currently a Santa Ana councilman.

Rackauckas says Bustamante called female employees to his office and made unwanted sexual advances and sometimes masturbated in front of them. He says Bustamante has also been charged with fraudulently receiving $3,100 in county funds for training he had agreed to pay for.

Bustamante was arrested Monday and released on $100,000 bond that night. A message left for Bustamante on Tuesday was not immediately returned.
