(CNS) – The AngelDogs Foundation, in partnership with several other California animal welfare organizations, plan to offer more than 1,000 free spay/neuter surgeries for dogs to low-income pet owners in Pacoima, Panorama City and Sylmar through the end of the year.
The free surgeries will be offered thanks to a grant from No Kill Los Angeles, an initiative of Best Friends Animal Society, according to the foundation. “Our organizations are thrilled to be able to carry out Best Friends Animal Society’s mission to make Los Angeles a no-kill city and we are all very grateful to them for allowing us to help the dog owners that need it most,” said AngelDogs Foundation Director Lisa Tipton.
The foundation’s mobile clinic began the program on Sunday, and will provide services to low-income dog owners several times a month.
Dog owners who reside in one of three ZIP codes — 91342, 91402 and 91331 — and have a household income of under $40,000 for a family of four are eligible for the free surgery, which includes a microchip with registration, vaccinations, an e-collar and pain medication, according to the foundation.
According to the foundation, studies show that one female dog and her offspring can give birth to 67,000 puppies in a six-year period. “Spay and neuter is crucial to ending the pet overpopulation problem by drastically reducing the number of unwanted animals that end up in city shelters and on city streets,” said Tipton. “This project is a tremendous benefit to taxpayers, low-income dog owners and the animal lovers of Los Angeles.”
