Coachella music festival tax plan dropped

(AP) – An Indio city councilman has dropped a proposed ticket tax for the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals after critics said it might drive the hugely popular events out of the Southern California desert town.

The Desert Sun says Councilman Sam Torres on Thursday dropped his plan to push a November ballot measure that would have tacked on 5- to 10-percent surcharge.

It would have tacked about $18 onto each ticket and raised some $4 million for city coffers.

The promoter had threatened to move the festivals if the measure made the ballot.

The festivals draw hundreds of thousands of people each year to the Coachella Valley and Torres says he didn’t want to risk the revenues they supply to restaurants, stores and hotels.
