Man commits suicide after Irvine police standoff
(AP) – Orange County authorities say a man has killed himself during a standoff with police at an Irvine home. Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen tells the Orange County Register that officers went to the home shortly before 1:30 p.m. Thursday after reports that a man had broken a window and was climbing inside.
Police learned that the 40-year-old had lived at the home but he was banned from it by court order because of a domestic issue.
Engen says a SWAT team surrounded the home after reports that the man had stolen a gun from a friend and threatened a shootout with police. Nearby residents were evacuated. Several hours later, police heard a gunshot and found the man dead in the home from a self-inflicted wound. His name hasn’t been released.
