SF considers ways to curb water bottles

(AP) – San Francisco lawmakers are considering a law that would require new and renovated buildings with water fountains to install special bottle-filling taps.

Board of Supervisors President David Chiu says the law is meant to encourage San Franciscans to refill reusable bottles rather than use plastic water bottles.

The proposed taps are usually put in drinking fountains. Supporters say the taps are easier to fill bottles in and will raise awareness about how good San Francisco’s tap water is.

But the city’s Building Owners and Management Association is skeptical, pointing out that the taps pour the same high-quality water that comes from most fountains and faucets.

The bill is expected to go before a supervisors’ committee in September and then, if it passes, before the full board.
