Anaheim City Council holds special meeting
(AP) – A special City Council meeting is scheduled in Anaheim, where two deadly police shootings sparked days of violent protests.
The council meets Thursday afternoon and will hear public comments before going into closed session to discuss a lawsuit challenging the way council members are chosen. The American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit claims the citywide voting system keeps Latinos off the council and elections should be held by districts.
It’s the first council meeting since July 24, which was disrupted by protesters following the police shootings of Manuel Diaz and Joel Acevedo.
Residents may have a chance to comment on the shootings, which sparked four days of violent protests that ended with smashed shop windows and dozens of arrests.
