(AP) – A Navy veteran who died after throwing himself in front of a friend during the Colorado movie theater shooting has been remembered for his fearlessness and positive attitude.

About 500 mourners packed a mortuary Friday in Reno where 26-year-old Jonathan Blunk was raised. They included his wife, his two young children, and dozens of service members.

Blunk, who served three tours in the Middle East from 2004 to 2009, was credited for saving his friend’s life when a heavily armed gunman burst into the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colo., two weeks ago, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.

Some speakers at Friday’s funeral said Blunk’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, and law enforcement authorities have told family members that this suggests he was trying to stop the shooter.

He received a full military burial at a hilltop cemetery overlooking Reno.
