(AP) – For years, it has been one of the main fixtures on the screen of Apple’s iPhone and iPad. But soon, it will be no more.

Apple says its next version of the operating system for its portable devices won’t have a pre-installed YouTube application. That won’t mean you can’t watch clips on your Apple device – it’s just that you’ll have to go through your web browser to do so.

Meanwhile, Google – which owns YouTube – is also working on a downloadable app.

All this is part of what appears to be a trend to divorce Apple products from Google’s wares. Back in June, Apple said the next version of its operating system would ditch Google Maps for an Apple-created version.

Google has its own operating system for smartphones that compete with the iPhone.
