(AP) – Jurors in Riverside County are deciding whether to recommend life without parole or the death penalty for a man convicted of killing his wife and her 6-year-old daughter after learning he wasn’t the child’s biological father.
The Press-Enterprise reports deliberations began Wednesday and are expected to continue Thursday in the case of 55-year-old Michael Barbar. Barbar was convicted July 13 of two counts of first-degree murder for the 2009 killings.
In closing arguments, his defense attorney said he was a loving father suffering from depression over his wife’s infidelity. Prosecutors showed surveillance video of Barbar playing slots at a casino hours after the bloody murders and asked jurors if he looked remorseful.
Barbar’s surviving daughter, 13-year-old Tarah, has asked the jury to spare her father’s life.
