(AP) – A great white shark sighting has led to warning signs on California central coast beaches. Surfers spotted the shark on Tuesday near Leadbetter Point in Santa Barbara.

KSBY-TV says the shark was swimming about five feet from the surfers and the dorsal fin and tail were out of the water. Based on the description of the shark, authorities determined it was likely a great white.

The Santa Barbara Waterfront Facilities manager says the city has posted warning signs on 14 beaches along the Santa Barbara coast. The signs will be up through Thursday unless there are more sightings.

Earlier this week, conservation groups announced they are asking the federal government to give protected status to great white sharks on the Pacific Coast.
