Weekend box office results
(CNS) – The high-octane sequel “The Expendables 2″ rocketed to the top of the North American box office, knocking the spy thriller “The Bourne Legacy” out of the top spot, according to final figures released today.
“The Expendables 2,” starring Sylvester Stallone and featuring former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, opened with $28.6 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office, while the latest “Bourne” film fell to second with $17 million.
The 3-D animated adventure “ParaNorman” opened in third place with $14 million, followed by the Will Ferrell comedy “The Campaign,” which earned $13.1 million in its second week of release.
Whitney Houston’s final film appearance, “Sparkle,” opened with $11.6 million, a solid opening for a film with a $14 million budget, according to Hollywood.com.
“The Dark Knight Rises” continued padding its box-office take, earning $11 million over the weekend to push its five-week total to $409.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” ($10.8 million); “Hope Springs” ($9.1 million); “Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” ($3.8 million); and “Total Recall” ($3.5 million).
