West Nile virus kills woman in Fresno County
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Fresno County reports that an elderly woman has died of West Nile virus, the county’s first virus-related death this year. The county Department of Public Health says the woman had been hospitalized and died of complications.
The Fresno Bee reports that so far this year, authorities have reported 26 cases of West Nile Virus in 10 counties. Officials say her death is only the second related fatality in California in 2012.
Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to people. One in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.
