TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Republican National Convention will be called to order this afternoon in Tampa, Fla., but the gavel will fall in a mostly empty hall.

The convention won’t hit full speed until tomorrow. And that’s when forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac could reach hurricane strength and make landfall somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle.

As he visited a New Hampshire high school auditorium today to practice his convention speech, Mitt Romney said he hopes people in the path of the storm are “spared any major destruction.”

Paul Ryan will head to Florida a day later than expected to accept his party’s vice presidential nomination.

GOP officials already have trimmed the convention by a day, to three days, because of the threat from Tropical Storm Isaac.
