HONOLULU (AP) – A United Airlines flight attendant will go into the Guinness Book of World Records after ending his 63-year career with a flight from Colorado to Hawaii. Eighty-three-year-old Ron Akana became the longest-serving flight attendant for any U.S. carrier over the weekend on a nonstop flight from Denver to Kauai. He returned home to Colorado on Monday.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the Honolulu-born Akana will go into the record book sometime this fall for the distinction.

During his final flight to Kauai, his longevity was announced over the public address system and passengers wrote well-wishes on index cards. Akana says he decided to retire when he was offered a buyout. He was one of the first eight male flight attendants at United.

He plans to spend his retirement traveling.
