Weekend box office 'possessed'

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The horror film “The Possession” debuted atop the domestic box office over Labor Day weekend, followed closely by a Prohibition- era thriller, according to final figures released today.

“The Possession” collected $21.1 million between Friday and Monday, followed by the debut of “Lawless,” which earned $12.9 million over the four- day period, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

The Expendables 2″ dropped to third place behind the two newcomers, earning $11.5 million over the long weekend. “The Bourne Legacy” snagged fourth place with $9.3 million, followed by the animated “ParaNorman,” which earned $8.9 million.

Rounding out the top 10 spots were “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” $8.6 million; “The Dark Knight Rises,” $8 million; “2016: Obama‘s America,” $7.5 million; “The Campaign,” $7.2 million; and “Hope Springs,” $6.1 million.
