HOLLYWOOD (CNS) – A man in his 50s was struck and killed by a car in Hollywood today, and police were seeking two people who got out of the vehicle and ran off.
The man died at the scene of the wreck, which was reported shortly after 5 a.m. at Western Avenue and Romaine Street, said Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The fatally injured man was a pedestrian, and the hit-and-run vehicle was abandoned at the scene, French said. Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, pending notification of his relatives.
Police said the car was weaving through traffic on Western, hit the pedestrian and then slammed into a tree. Witnesses at the scene said two men, believed to be in their 20s, stumbled out of the car and ran off. A broadcast report indicated that the men may have been in a rental car and jumped into a second rental vehicle a short distance from the crash.
