Searching for clues of 3 freeway brush fires
ARLETA (CNS) – Three brush fires broke out along the westbound Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway near the Golden State (5) Freeway in the Arleta area this afternoon and investigators were trying to figure out whether they were related.
The fires were reported about 1:50 p.m. near San Fernando Road, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The California Highway Patrol routed traffic away from the area as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, prompting closure of the north- and southbound 5 Freeway in the vicinity. The southbound side was reopened relatively quickly, but the northbound side was expected to stay closed until about 3:30 p.m.
The fires appeared to be about a mile apart and it was a bit of a mystery if or how they were related, Humphrey said, though he said at least one of the blazes may have been started by a downed wire.
About 40 firefighters were dispatched, he said, adding that one garage in the 10700 block of Arleta Avenue sustained some damage. No injuries were reported.
