MECCA, Calif. (AP) – Early morning thunderstorms over southeastern California’s Coachella Valley has flooded in mobile home parks in Mecca and Thermal and forced several road closures.
Riverside County spokesman Ray Smith says the storm early Tuesday also flooded Saul Martinez Elementary School in Mecca. In Thermal, half of the Desert Mobile Home Park better known as Duroville was flooded with a foot of water and St. Anthony’s Mobile Home Park in Mecca was also affected. Officials estimated 900 residents are still in their homes at Duroville as crews try to assess water and electrical systems.
The National Weather Service says more than 5 inches of rain fell in an area bounded by the Salton Sea communities of Oasis, Mecca and North Shore. A voluntary evacuation center has been established in Mecca.
