LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A brush fire broke out in Rustic Canyon today and threatened to spread into Topanga State Park.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 3000 block of Rustic Canyon Road at 12:28 a.m., a fire department spokesman said.
By about 8:30 p.m., the fire had blackened about 30 acres, but no structures were in harm’s way immediately, LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
The blaze is about 30 percent contained, Humphrey said.
Five water-dropping helicopters were assigned to the fire, and two county-leased SuperScooper planes were dispatched to help quench the fire. How it started was not immediately known.
About 100 people were at Camp Josepho, near the top of the Sullivan Canyon fire road, but they were not immediately threatened, according to the fire department.
The fire erupted just miles away from the Sepulveda Pass, where a fire broke out during the afternoon commute on Friday. Firefighters expect to have this fire, which has burned 90 acres, fully out by Sunday.
