SANTA CLARITA (CNS) – Caltrans will close lanes nightly though Saturday morning as part of a $72 million project to add truck lanes to the Golden State (5) Freeway in the Santa Clarita area.
– One or two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway between the end of the existing truck lane and Lyons Avenue will be closed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.; and
– one or two lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway between Lyons Avenue and the end of the existing truck lane will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The project will add a truck lane to the outside of the 5 Freeway in each direction by paving the median area and the outside shoulder, and by shifting “mixed flow” traffic lanes inward. Median retaining walls — and two short sections of outside retaining walls — will be built to accommodate the widening.
When completed in early 2014, the southbound truck lane will run from Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Avenue to the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, and the northbound lane will extend from the 14 Freeway to Gavin Canyon, according to Caltrans. The work began in May.
