Brazen daytime iPad theft in SF ends in crash
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco police say three men were taken into custody in the brazen daytime theft of an iPad during which the suspects crashed into a minivan, injuring its driver and a child on a nearby playground.
The incident began around 5 p.m. Wednesday when a woman’s backpack containing an iPad was stolen in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. Dozens of people witnessed the theft and called police with a description of the getaway vehicle.
Witnesses told the San Francisco Chronicle the vehicle broadsided a minivan as it sped through an intersection with officers in pursuit. Police Capt. Ann Mannix says the driver of the minivan was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The child was hit by flying debris and suffered minor injuries. Two of the suspects also suffered minor injuries. None of the suspects has been identified.
