Hotel Transylvania sets record

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The animated “Hotel Transylvania” topped the weekend box office with a record-setting haul for a September opening, according to final figures released today.

The 3-D film earned $42.5 million between Friday and Sunday, beating the record for a September film debut held by 2002’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” which opened with $35.65 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

The action thriller “Looper” opened in second place with $20.8 million, while “End of Watch,” which earned $7.8 million. Clint Eastwood’s drama “Trouble with the Curve” earned $7.2 million, while “House at the End of the Street” placed fifth with $7.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films over the weekend were “Pitch Perfect” ($5.1 million); “Finding Nemo 3-D” ($4 million); “Resident Evil: Retribution” ($3 million); “The Master” ($2.7 million); and “Won’t Back Down” ($2.6 million)
