SAN DIEGO (AP) – SeaWorld says an 11-year-old orca injured during a night performance is on antibiotics and starting to regrow tissue to the wound on his lower jaw.
The park said in a statement Monday that Nakai was injured Sept. 20 after engaging in “normal social behavior” with two whales. It did not specify how the accident happened.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says Nakai lost a dinner-plate size chunk of his jaw down to the bone in an attack by other orcas.
The animal rights group says it filed a complaint with the U.S. Agriculture Department, demanding an investigation. The group plans to protest Wednesday at the park with a demonstrator in a bandaged orca costume. It says orcas can attack when confined.
SeaWorld officials declined comment on the complaint.
