UN Ambassador Rice denies misleading Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations denies she was trying to mislead Congress when she initially said the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya was a spontaneous protest. Susan Rice wrote three Republican senators that she offered the best information she had at the time from intelligence officials.

The attack on Sept. 11 killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. U.S. officials have modified their initial assessment and said the attack was an act of terrorism.

Rice wrote senators John McCain, Kelly Ayotte and Ron Johnson that she consistently qualified her remarks on television shows as preliminary.

The senators said they were not satisfied with the explanation. They said the intelligence community apparently told the Obama administration within hours that militants connected with al-Qaida were involved.
