INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) – A jail inmate suspected of drug use was shot to death in a hospital emergency room after he grabbed a gun from a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, authorities said.
The 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene at Centinela Hospital Medical Center shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, sheriff’s officials said.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of possession a controlled substance. While in jail at the sheriff’s South Los Angeles station, the man complained of feeling ill and was taken to the hospital, authorities said.
The man, who had one wrist handcuffed to a gurney, was in a triage room with two deputies when he suddenly grabbed the gun from a deputy’s belt and “tried to gain possession of it,” sheriff’s Lt. Holly Francisco said.
Another deputy fired a shot that killed him. No one else was hurt.
