NEW YORK (AP) – They say it was a plot that never got past the discussion phase — but federal authorities say a Bangladeshi man was considering going after President Barack Obama, before deciding instead to try to bomb the New York office of the Federal Reserve.
Quazi Nafis was arrested outside the building yesterday, after allegedly trying to set off what turned out to be a fake 1,000-pound bomb in a vehicle.
Authorities have said he also considered targeting the New York Stock Exchange.
Family members in Bangladesh say he couldn’t have been involved in something like that. His father says he’s “very gentle and devoted to his studies.”
But a spokesman for the university that Quazi Nafis attended in Bangladesh says he was a terrible student who eventually just stopped coming to class.
