SoCal kayaker finds New Zealand message bottle
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) – A San Diego County kayaker has found a message in a bottle that floated all the way from New Zealand.
The North County Times says 77-year-old Sonja van Hall kayaks nearly every day out of Oceanside Harbor and has spent a decade picking up sea trash. Last Friday, she retrieved two floating bottles.
Back on shore, she discovered that the bottles had floated thousands of miles from Katikati, a town about two hours from Auckland. A group of schoolchildren wrote messages and tossed the bottles out to sea in May as a class project.
Van Hall says she’s eager to talk to the teacher there and set up a pen-pal program. Van Hall says she has a 9-year-old grandson who’s about the same age as the message-writers.
