Assault rifle, ammo stolen from Westchester garage
LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Police today investigated the theft of an assault rifle, 2,000 rounds of ammunition and about $20,000 in collectible coins and U.S. currency from the garage of a home in the Westchester section of Los Angeles.
The theft in the 6600 block of West 80th Place was carried out around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Craig Brown of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Station.
The homeowner and a friend were packing to move when they went inside the house for a dinner break, leaving the garage door wide open, Brown said. They discovered the theft once they had finished their meal, he said.
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood in vain for witnesses. “Nobody saw anything,” Brown said.
The firearm and ammunition were legally owned, Brown said. The stolen items were inside packed boxes.
