Personal safety? There's an app for that (audio)
If you were in trouble, who would be the first person you’d call? The second? What if you could notify your top five emergency contacts with a text and GPS location? A new smartphone app, the GWEN Alert, does just that. With one click it silently sends an emergency SMS text and GPS location to five contacts.
The GWEN Alert provides a secret defense for those in abusive relationships; traveling or meeting people alone; children, teens and young people in danger; as well as senior citizens living alone who are in jeopardy or feel threatened.
The GWEN Alert also works for pre-programmed national hotlines or a local emergency number of the user’s choice.
The Global Women’s Empowerment Network (GWEN) is a nonprofit organization that uses cutting-edge technology to raise awareness and support programs that heal women and children who have suffered abuse.
Tess Cacciatore, GWEN co- founder, talks with KFWB’s Maggie McKay and Michael Shappee about the free app.
