BURBANK (CNS) – The Walt Disney Co. announced a $2 million donation today to relief efforts from superstorm Sandy, which pounded the East Coast this week.

According to Disney, $1 million will be donated to the American Red Cross for immediate relief efforts, and another $1 million will be designated for groups working on rebuilding efforts.

The company also plans to match donations by Disney employees to companies involved in disaster relief.

“It’s hard to fathom the devastation from this storm,” Disney Chairman/CEO Robert A. Iger said. “Thousands of people in the hurricane’s path lost everything and face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together. We hope this helps provide immediate aid needed to get through this disaster and begin the road to recovery.”

Disney officials said the company will also run public service announcements on its television and radio networks — including ABC and ESPN, encouraging viewers to donate.
