Weekend box office: 'Wreck-It' does

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The animated adventure “Wreck-It Ralph” destroyed the competition at North American movie theaters, debuting with $49 million to claim the top spot at the box office, according to final figures released today.

The film easily bested the debut of Denzel Washington’s drama “Flight,” which opened in second place with $24.9 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

Ben Affleck’s thriller “Argo” continued to attract audiences thanks to strong word-of-mouth, collecting another $10.2 million and pushing its four- week total to $75.9 million.

The action film “The Man with the Iron Fists” opened in fourth place with $7.9 million, while the thriller “Taken 2″ earned $5.9 million, pushing its five-week take to $125.6 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Cloud Atlas” ($5.4 million); “Hotel Transylvania” ($4.4 million); “Paranormal Activity 4″ ($4.3 million); “Here Comes the Boom” ($3.5 million); and “Silent Hill: Revelation” ($3.3 million).
