LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors say Kentucky Fried Chicken and one of its largest franchisees have agreed to pay a $200,000 fine for various health and safety violations.

Spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons says the agreement announced Tuesday stems from KFC’s 2009 rollout of its grilled chicken menu items, which allegedly resulted in the installation of new ovens that caused unsafe smoke ventilation in some facilities.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles, Napa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties filed a lawsuit, claiming KFC and Harman Management Corp. failed to follow proper procedures for installing new cooking equipment.

KFC and Harman agreed to pay $200,000 in civil penalties and $94,000 in costs to settle the complaints.
