HANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Kings County animal control officers are trying to determine who is responsible for a gruesome, recent discovery: 10 dead horses and three others close to death on a lot with no food or water.

Officers said they had gone to the same spot three months ago and pointed out a dying horse to the caretaker. Animal Services Director Teri Rockhold told the Hanford Sentinel that the caretaker then shot it.

The newspaper reports that the Tachi Yokut tribe owns the land. Calls by the Associated Press to the tribe’s headquarters at the Santa Rosa Rancheria were not immediately returned Friday.

Animal services is investigating to find out who is responsible for Wednesday’s discovery. The newspaper reports that tribal security said the culprit could face a $200 animal cruelty citation.
