LOS ANGELES (AP) – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa named Eloise Klein Healy on Friday as the city’s first poet laureate.
The award-winning poet is the author of seven books, including “The Island Project: Poems for Sappho.”
She established Antioch University’s masters of fine arts in creative writing program and was founding editor of Arktoi Books, which specializes in works by lesbian authors.
During her two-year term, Healy will travel throughout the city promoting poetry and encouraging other writers. She’ll be paid $10,000 a year.
Villaraigosa appointed her after considering the recommendations of a task force of literary experts.
With Healy’s appointment, Los Angeles joins such cities as Boston, San Francisco and Santa Barbara in having a poet laureate.
