OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – San Francisco and Oakland police hope a holiday gun buyback program will get firearms off the street.

The Oakland Tribune reports that the buyback on Saturday will offer $200 each for up to three weapons per person. Only gun owners with verified residence in either San Francisco or Oakland qualify.

Gun sellers will need a driver’s license, utility bill, cellphone bill or mortgage paperwork to prove residency, and police said there will be no background or warrant checks for those who participate.

The residency requirement is meant to sidestep problems seen in a “no questions asked” gun buyback program in 2008.

That program saw plagued by gun owners from outside the area turning over useless antiques and other unsellable weapons.
