LOS ANGELES (AP) — Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has received an $11 million gift from the estate of late Oscar-winning filmmaker Billy Wilder and his wife.
The money from Billy and Audrey Wilder will create an endowed chair of the hospital’s Division of Neurosurgery, which is being named after the late couple.
Hospital spokesman Lorenzo Benet tells the Los Angeles Times that the hospital was told it was named in the estate but the amount wasn’t known until this week. He says administrators were quite surprised.
Audrey, a singer and actress who died in June, met Billy Wilder on the 1944 set of “The Lost Weekend,” which earned the director an Oscar. He also won Oscars for “Sunset Blvd.” and “The Apartment.”
Wilder died in 2002.
