BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) — A man whose truck was taken by a carjacker believed to be ex-Los Angeles cop Christopher Dorner says the fugitive appeared calm and didn’t want to hurt him.
Rick Heltebrake says he instantly recognized Dorner, who had a large assault rifle pointed at him Tuesday on a Southern California mountain road.
Heltebrake says the carjacker took the truck and seconds later gunfire broke out.
The carjacker then ran into a nearby cabin and was involved in a shootout with law enforcement. One sheriff’s deputy was killed and another was wounded.
The cabin later erupted in flames and a charred body was subsequently found inside.
