LA mayoral candidates campaign ahead of primary
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Candidates for Los Angeles mayor are making a final sprint for votes ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.
Polls show a tight contest between City Councilman Eric Garcetti and Controller Wendy Greuel, both Democrats.
Garcetti, who has the backing of term-limited Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, is riding LA Metro trains Monday, hopping off to chat with commuters and visit businesses.
Greuel is visiting restaurants, coffee shops and an old age home.
An expected low turnout makes surprises more likely, elevating the roles of Democratic Councilwoman Jan Perry and Republican Kevin James, a former prosecutor and radio talk show host.
Former technology executive Emanuel Pleitez is also on the ballot.
If no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote, then the top two finishers advance to a runoff in May.
