TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — The “Harlem Shake” has swept up Tunisian youth, provoking attacks by conservative Muslims, condemnation by the education minister and hundreds of copycat videos.
Students at El Menzah high school filmed their own version of the global YouTube video sensation in which participants dance maniacally for 30 seconds to the song “Harlem Shake,” by Brooklyn DJ Bauuer.
It sparked an angry reaction from Minister of Education Abdellatif Abid who announced an investigation of the principal for the “indecent” video.
The minister’s move, however, has not stemmed a tide of new videos. In many cases, students filming the video in different schools around the country were attacked by religious conservatives.
