Inmates repair eyeglasses for the homeless and low income
LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Lions Club International is helping recycle donated eyeglasses by having hearing- and sight-impaired inmates at Twin Towers jail clean them up and recalibrate them for homeless people and others who cannot afford an optometrist.
The inmates have refurbished about 2,000 pairs of eyeglasses since the project started in 2011, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Harley.
The program was such a success it was expanded in February to include mobility-impaired inmates at Men’s Central Jail, and additional calibration machines were bought.
