Stinky sea lions cause dilemma
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) – The sea lions in Ventura Harbor make a mess and stink like those at many other harbors in California but they also attract tourists so the port district has a dilemma.
Officials say the animals are destroying the docks because they can’t handle the weight of the sea lions.
The Ventura County Star says Harbormaster Scott Miller told port district commissioners Wednesday they can’t afford 30 or 40 SealStops at $6,000 each so he is going to try two-by-fours on the docks.
Miller says he’s worried about public safety too.
Commissioners say they could do what San Francisco did at Pier 39 – build a sturdier float just for the sea lions. And maybe they could add a wow factor.
Miller says that’s a money problem.
