Bing and Windows Phone have launched a national consumer education campaign at Scroogled.com to inform Americans that Google’s app store, Google Play, sends your personal information, including your full name, email address, and the neighborhood where you live, to app makers each time you buy an app. Google sends the information without clear warning and users can’t opt-out of the practice.

Greg Sullivan, Microsoft senior manager of Windows Phone, explains why they felt the need to create a website called Scroogled in this interview with Maggie and Michael:

According to a new public study conducted by GfK, 91 percent of Americans disapprove of, and 87 percent are unaware that any major app store shares users’ personal information with app makers. These include apps related to personal subjects, such as health conditions and sexual behavior. GfK is the leading polling firm for the Associated Press.

Key results from the survey include:

·         91% of Americans disapprove of app stores sharing personal information such as user’s full name, email address, and the neighborhood where they live, with the maker of the apps they purchase. 59% disapprove strongly.

·         87% of Americans are unaware or don’t know whether any major app store shares users personal information such user’s full name, email address, and the neighborhood where they live, with the makers of the apps they purchase.

·         90% of Americans agree that app stores should not be allowed to share users personal information with the makers of the apps they purchase without an opt-out opportunity.

·         91% of American agree that app stores should warn users before sharing their personal information with the makers of the apps they purchase.

·         84% of Americans agree that app stores sharing users personal information with the makers of the apps they purchase is an invasion of privacy.
