Why I don’t bet on sports
Let’s just jump in the DeLorean Time Machine and go back a couple of months. It’s early September 2012. It’s not a question of whether the Lakers will win the NBA Championship, but will this collection of All Stars be hailed as the greatest team ever.
Meanwhile, USC is rated the number one team in the country and quarterback Matt Barkley is the hands down favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
The Lakers debacle is fresh in our mind. Barely making the playoffs, swept in the first round by the Spurs. And it wasn’t just the injuries. It was about being old and slow.
As for the Trojans, they finished 7-and-6 — no awards for Matt. And no big pay day. He wasn’t even picked ’til the fourth round of the NFL draft.
Oh. One other thing about seven months ago. We were still basking in the glow of the Kings’ stunning Stanley Cup Championship.
One of the oldest cliches in the book is, “That is why they play the games.” You just never know.
