Bleak times for local sports fans
“And here’s to you, Los Angeles Kings; So-Cal turns its lonely eyes to you.”
Why do the sports gods hate us? All the way back to last fall. A USC team that was a pre-season number one finished 7-and-5. Then the resurgence of UCLA basketball ended with a first round ouster in the NCAA tournament and a fired coach. Then the best NBA team EVAH… the Lakers… limped into the playoffs only to be swept in the first round. The Best Clippers season ever ended with four straight losses to Memphis. The Dodgers and Angels with their record breaking payrolls both have losing records.
And then there was that Kings-Ducks playoff series we were already hyping. Not going to happen. Not after the Ducks got ousted in the first round by Detroit, a team that barely made the playoffs. For the moment… that just leaves the Kings. Stanley Cup champs a year ago; survivors of their first round series with St. Louis. And, of course, there is our Galaxy; the two-time defending champions of Major League Soccer.
Yeah, when I first came to L.A. to work as a sportscaster, I was told this area was big on hockey and soccer.
