Social media rules given for adult beverage makers
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — Wine, beer and spirits makers that use social media to promote beverages must abide by new federal guidelines governing the practice.
The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s new guidelines say companies selling adult beverages are subject to advertising rules in posts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
The companies will now have to include mandatory statements on their social media profiles or brand pages, not on each individual tweet or post.
The rules also prohibit companies from making false health and other claims.
Jordan Winery communications director Lisa Mattson says there is a lack of clarity on the rules, like if they apply to previous posts or just future ones.
